Settled into the eastern waters of the Mediterranean Sea, Cyprus continues to be one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations.
Since partition in 1974 the island has been split into two separately governed territories, with the Turkish-Cypriot region in the north and the larger Greek-Cypriot region to the South. Despite the subtle Arabian influences in its architecture and cuisine due to its close proximity to the shores of Asia and Africa, Cyprus retains a distinctively European feel. There is the unmistakable Western influence of the hugely popular beach resorts of Ayia Napa and Limasol, a hotbed of sun-worship and nightclubbing for hoards of British holiday-makers every summer.
For the history and cultural tourists there are monuments to the region’s past, from the ancient village of Khirokitia to the relics of its many former rulers from Alexander the Great to the Ottomans. There is also the chance to dip into Greek mythology with a trip to Paphos and its alleged links to the God Aphrodite.
Hot summers, generally mild winters and a mix of wild nightlife, resplendent coastlines, and a plethora of shops, bars and restaurants make Cyprus a destination for young and old, singles and families.
Car hire is available all the year round from a dozen pick-up points. But be warned, the island is very busy during the summer months (May – September) so early booking is recommended.
